Research is a primary activity in the Department that ranks only second in importance to the teaching programmes. Research enables the faculty members to stay at the forefront of technology development and knowledge creation in their specialist areas. This in turn ensures that our students receive the latest information and enjoy rigorous and cutting-edge training at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Department’s research extends over all the fundamental mechanical engineering disciplines, such as solid mechanics, dynamics and control/robotics, fluid mechanics and aerodynamics, energy and thermodynamics, manufacturing technology and systems, and mechanical behaviour of materials.
In an age where boundaries between traditional disciplines are becoming blurred, a large part of the Department’s research is now centred on bio-related and medical-related problems in which mechanical processes play an important part. Micro-systems and micro-nano engineering have also become a regular playground for the researchers.
As the second largest department in the Faculty of Egineering, the Mechanical Engineering Department is proud to be a key contributor to the high research ranking of the Engineering Faculty of NUS in international benchmarking surveys.
